Not unworthy of a visit

Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou ProvinceNo stand-out sights and quite a generic city
China off the beaten tourist track
Good food and some decent sights

Let's face it. If you asked us for a must-see city in China, Guiyang (贵阳), capital of Guizhou, would probably not top our list. But provincial capitals are not meant to top any lists, and that doesn't necessarily make them unworthy of a visit.

If we were to tell you about the tourist sites, we would spend some time talking about Qianglin Park, roamed about by monkeys and with Hongfu Temple as its highlight. We would then go on to tell you about the Ming-era Jiaxiu Tower and Hebin Park. After that our attention would very swiftly move to places to the south of the city such as the fortress-like Qingyan Ancient Town in which you will find Ming and Qing era buildings and around which you find minority villages. Or the Tianhe Lake (Tianhetan) with its pool, waterfalls, and spectacular rocky scenery. We could tell you all about those.

But instead we will tell you this. Guiyang may be not all that different from other major Chinese cities. Its urban sprawl is generic, the sights are decent but not top of class, its spicy food is good but not that famous, and so on. But if you feel like checking out a city in China that is quite easily reached (it has daily arrivals from all over the country), yet where there will be not a foreigner in sight and English will help you with nothing at all, Guiyang is your destination. And of course, it makes for a good base for further trips into Guizhou. [Review by travelindicator]
