Gordes is a small town (pop. 2000) in the French Provence, at about a 45 minutes drive from Avignon or well over an hour from Marseille. It is often said to be amongst the most enchanting villages in France.
Built on top of a rocky cliff in mostly sandstone colors as if trying to disguise itself, from a distance Gordes can seem like an untakeable fortress. Which was of course entirely the point for this village with a history going back to the days of the Roman Empire.
Although the outside of Gordes may be picturesque in a somewhat rugged way, the inside boasts nothing but charm. Narrow cobbled streets are lined with high houses covered by green, restaurants, boulangeries and pharmacies. And at its very heart stands a castle that is open to visitors. The panoramas from the top over the surrounding area are excellent too. [Review by travelindicator]
