Essaouira is a fishing town of 70,000 on Morocco's Atlantic coast, at a 2 hour drive from Marrakesh. Its laid-back atmosphere, beaches and dramatically fortified medina make this a popular getaway from the bigger cities in the country. For some this place was put on the map in the 1960s when the hippies discovered it and stars like Jimi Hendrix decided to pass by here.
One thing you will notice instantly when entering Essaouira is how windy the place is. Strong winds seems to be an almost constant factor here, making a day out on the beach probably involve a little less sitting on the sand and a little more being active and making use of the wind by flying kite or windsurfing.
Another thing that makes the town stand out is that you can actually walk around the souks in the medina - which is UNESCO listed - and browse in peace without getting harassed (too much). Do this at your leisure, taking a break for a mint tea and a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the medina in between. At the end of the day head over to the beach or the ramparts facing the sea to stroll around during sunset. If you spend more than a day or two here you may want to consider a camel ride into town or the desert. [Review by travelindicator]
