Durban (South Africa)

Durban Travel Guide and Trip Resources

South Africa's most multicultural city

Durban is a city on South Africa's east coast with a population of nearly 3.5 million. It is the largest city of KwaZulu-Natal province and is home to Africa's biggest container port. Given its year-round warm weather and good beaches (most famous are the wide and sandy beaches of the Golden Mile that stretches out in front of the downtown area), Durban is a favorite holiday destination for South Africans.

Besides beaches, Durban is characterised by its large Indian population. They originally came to work at the sugar cane plantations around, and now form one of the largest concentrations of Indians anywhere outside of India. Needless to say, after a great day on the beach you can get a good curry here. To explore the typical sights, smells and sounds of India, head over to the Indian District.

Durban is a huge city, so expect all the the conveniences and pleasures that come along with that, including good shopping, eating and nightlife. The city is not extremely rich in terms of tourist attractions, but the Durban Botanical Gardens and uShaka Sea World, one of the world's largest aquariums, are are definitely worthy of spending a decent amount of time at.
