Dhaka (or Dacca, as it used to be spelled) is the capital of Bangladesh. With a current population totalling over 14 million it is one of the major cities in Asia and indeed the world. With roughly 34% of the population living below the "poverty line" (but seemingly hard at work on getting that ratio to decrease), and it being one of the most densely populated places anywhere on earth, the picture is complete: Dhaka is absolutely overwhelming and not for the faint-hearted.
To set the scene: tourist facilities in Dhaka are undeveloped, the infrastructure is poor, getting around is chaotic, toilets are... well, enough about that. That is the kind of place Dhaka is. Don't come here expecting a smooth tourist experience and hopping from attraction to attraction. Instead go here realising that at some point during your first day you will probably be standing at a street with an unpronounceable (or readable) name, sweat dripping off your forehead, a million people and sounds around you fighting for your attention, and having to decide: "Where to next and how on earth to get there?" (of course there are also 5 star hotels in town, and you can make it as comfortable as you wish to, but you get the picture!)
If you can stand the pressure and enjoy such "attack on the senses" holidays, Dhaka is absolutely the place for you. And there is a lot to be seen. Old churches, ancient hindu temples and mosques stand here side by side. Make sure to visit the Armenian church, the Dhakeshwari Temple and Khan Mohammad Mridha’s Mosque or the Star Mosque to make sure you have the whole religious spectrum you find here covered. After that, make sure to make your way to Old Dhaka to explore the narrow streets and ancient buildings, all the while gawking at all the things going on around you. Other attractions include Lalbagh Fort and Sadarghat River Port, which is the extremely chaotic port at the Buriganga River.
Shopping can be done at the many bazars or markets, and eating is obviously a feast as Bangladeshi food is fantastic - you are advised to stay away from the street food, however. [Review by travelindicator]
