The Iowa State Fair: fried food, beer, weird contests involving animals, concerts and rides

Des Moines. Its name sounds quite exotic, but there's not much that is exotic about this capital and largest city of the US state of Iowa in America's Midwest. Surrounded on all sides by endless corn fields, it is consistently listed as one of the wealthier cities in the country. It is also considered to be one of the world capitals of the insurance business. That really says it all doesn't it?

No it doesn't. It's easy to write off this city for tourism purposes, but we bet you would actually quite enjoy your stay here. There are architectural highlights like the Renaissance style Capitol Building with its golden dome (built in the late 19th century). Or Terrace Hill (where the Governor of Iowa resides) and Salisbury House, a mansion built in Tudor, Caroleon and Gothic styles whose 42 rooms can be toured. Other attractions to consider are several interesting museums and a botanical garden.

Every August the Iowa State Fair takes place here. This fair has numerous things to do for its c. 1 million visitors each year, including concerts by famous artists, rides and a ferris wheel, beer tents, plenty of (fried) food and agriculture related contests. It's good fun.

Finally, for those looking for a fun night out, head to Court District. And for those looking to shop or eat head to East Village, a pretty area that is best explored on foot. [Review by travelindicator]
