With the Rocky Mountains in the background, the skyline of Denver which might otherwise be rather ordinary, becomes magnificent. We think that is very fitting for a city which on paper may seem rather ordinary, but in reality is anything but that.
Known as the "mile high" city for it's high altitude location at the western edge of the Great Plains and near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Denver is an excellent place to explore the wider region from. In winter there are numerous ski resorts within a few hours drive, while in summer (or winter, if that's your thing) there are countless day hikes from the city (see links below).
And the city itself? Well, Denver is a city of 600,000, the capital of Colorado and is an excellent place to spend a few days in. The golden-domed Colorado State Capitol is gorgeous and worth checking out, while Larimer Square near downtown is an atmospheric low-rise area of taverns, shops and restaurants that has a polished small-town feeling to it. But other than that, what really stands out to us about the city are its parks and museums. The City Park that hosts the Denver Zoo and Museum of Nature and Science is magnificent, while Cheesman Park and the nearby Denver Botanic Gardens are no less great. There are literally dozens of museums in town, but the Denver Art Museum and Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art are top our list. [Review by travelindicator]
