Delhi Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Ancient city with endless sights

Delhi, or alternatively the National Capital Territory of India, is a metropolis in India that incorporates the national capital of New Delhi. The metropolitan region has near to 22 million inhabitants, making it the second most populated city in the world and one of Asia's most prominent megacities. While Mumbai may take the Indian crown in economic and commercial terms, Delhi is the country's political capital.

The history of Delhi goes thousands of years back, perhaps as much as 5000 years. The city has been destroyed and rebuilt many times in that period, and most historical sights date back anywhere between 500-1000 years. Some of the top attractions are located in Old Delhi, and at the center of it all tourist activity stands the Red Fort with its long walls, built by the Mughal emperor in the 17th century to keep out invaders. The Jama Mashid, the largest and most renowned mosque in entire India, is also nearby. In and around Old Delhi you will find the attack-on-the-senses India that you see on postcards: enormous crowds and chaos, bazaars, rickshaws and unfamiliar sounds and smells from all directions. Street food in this area is worth a try, the Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar are especially good areas to go for this. The most famous snack is chaat, a fried bread filled with potato and tangy spices.

The rest of New Delhi offers endless amounts of attractions, some with UNESCO status. Tombs, gardens, Indo-Islamic architecture, temples and mosques. If you dare to do a bit of haggling, make your way to some of the vibrant and exotic markets. If you are after some souvenirs, a good one is Dilli Haat, selling anything from gems, wood carvings, beads to silk, wool, and so on...

Finally, Delhi is one of those cities where you need to seriously consider the timing of your trip. Anywhere between November and February is your best bet, as rainfall is minimal and temperatures are fairly low, hovering around 20 degrees Celsius of 70 degrees Fahrenheit max. Between February and April the maximum temperature shoots up in extreme fashion from 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit) to 36 degrees Celsius (96 degrees Fahrenheit).
