Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal, a country in north-western Africa. Situated on the small and pointy Cap-Vert peninsula that sticks out into the Atlantic, this city of nearly 2.5 million people is the westernmost city of mainland Africa. If you look at a map, Senegal is located at that point in Africa where the sands of the Sahara start to make place for increasingly brighter green. Dakar itself however is still firmly located in the more sandy part of things, as evidenced by it being the finish of the famous Paris-Dakar rally.
Besides markets, mosques, a cathedral and beaches that are quite spectacular, there are two main things you will want to check out in Dakar. The first one is the absolutely massive African Renaissance Monument. This is a monument dedicated to the end of slavery and the exploitation of the continent by European powers. It was built by North Koreans and is rather controversial for its stalinist style. Bizarre, but interesting nonetheless.
The other one is Goree Island (Ile de Goree), a small island that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and located just off the coast. It is home to the House of Slaves museum and colonial architecture.
Note that although the people of Senegal and Dakar are particularly friendly, you will need to take care of your belongings and be constantly vigilant for not being scammed while here. [Review by travelindicator]
