Chile's second largest city

Decent nightlife

When a leading photo next to an article is either a generic cityscape or an indistinct atmospheric shot that doesn't really tell you much at all, you have the right to get a little bit suspicious. It is not that there is no reason at all to travel to Concepción, second largest city of Chile if you count by the metropolitan area, but it is also not like if you come here you will find yourself entertained for days and days.

Above anything else, Concepción is a university town. Home to three traditional universities and numerous private institutions, student numbers here easily top the 50,000 and as it goes anywhere else in the world that has its impact on the city. If you head over to the barrio universitario you can stroll around the grounds of the Universidad de Concepción where you will find gardens, architectural highlights and a few museums. Best of all is the Casa del Arte (Pinacoteca) where the highlight is an enormous mural.

Outside of the university this city, which was founded in 1550, is building a reputation for itself as somewhat of a green one. That makes sense as the greenery encroaches deep into the city here. Parque Ecuador, the Cerra Caracol with decent views over town and Bio Bio river side are all excellent examples of green attractions in town. Other than that, of course you get your cathedral, churches and other such sights. Next to town lies the naval base of Talcahuano where you can tour the Huascar, a captured Peruvian ship from the War of the Pacific (1879–1883). Of course being a university city, the nightlife here is by all standards hot and happening. [Review by travelindicator]
