Colonia del Sacramento (Colonia in short) is a city next to the Rio de la Plata in southern Uruguay, facing Buenos Aires on the other side of the bay, and a popular destination for day trips from that city. Montevideo lies 160km east.
Colonia has a population of 26,231 and is best known for its historical center which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese in an otherwise Spanish-only colonial area, afterwards changing ownership several times. Colonia consists of (as UNESCO calls them, "modest") colonial era buildings, squares and cobblestone streets and is rather small scale and walkable.
One of the iconic streets is the Calle de los Suspiros, with thick cobbled stones and colorful houses on either side. Other attractions include several (again, modest) museums and a lighthouse called El Faro which offers a nice view over the Rio and the city. Other than that, go for a nice meal, shop for some handicrafts and just take it easy. It is that kind of town. [Review by travelindicator]
