Christchurch is the largest city of New Zealand's South Island, situated in the region of Canterbury and with a population of nearly 400,000. It was the site of four large earthquakes between 2010 and 2012, causing widespread damage to buildings as well as loss of lives. Many of the damaged buildings had to be demolished, and as reconstruction of the city acquires speed it is inevitable that its face will change.
Devastating as though the earthquakes may have been, classic attractions are fast reopening and the positive energy from a city willing to rebuild itself seemingly outweights the negative energy of the drama that took place here. It may take a while for the Cathedral to look somewhat presentable again, but at least the Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Gondola and picturesque places like New Regent Street are now in operation again.
