Charlotte Amalie (Virgin Islands, U.S.)

Charlotte Amalie Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Cruise ship territory

Charlotte Amalie is the capital and largest ciy of the U.S. Virgin Islands, located on the island of St. Thomas. The city has a population of just under 20,000 and its port is one of the busiest in the world for cruise ships.

The Danish ruled over Charlote Amalie and the rest of the island between the 17th century and 1917, when the US government purchased it from them. Nowadays the city still has plenty of Danish colonial architecture to show off. Notable are the bright red Fort Christian just outside of town, as well as Blackbeard's Castle.

It goes without saying that white-sand beaches are in close proximity (if not exactly right in town), but the other main activity here is shopping. This is duty-free territory, and a great place to go for jewelry and designer clothes and bags. [Review by travelindicator]
