Capital of the puppet state

Changchun is a Chinese metropolis of 8 million people, 850km to the north-east of Beijing
Main sights relate to its history as the capital of the Manchukuo puppet state
China's best ski resorts are nearby

That's right, here goes another Chinese megacity. It may not be quite a household name for those of us residing outside of China, but at nearly 8 million people it is not unreasonable to suggest that we should take note of its existence.

Changchun has a place in China's more recent history as being the capital of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo (under the name of Xinjing or 新京, "new capital") from 1933 until the conclusion of the second world war. For those interested in Manchukuo, Pu Yi and everything around that, of specific interest will be sights like the Puppet Imperial Palace and the colonial buildings on Wenhua Square. Other sights include temples like Banruo Temple and the park around South Lake. In the latter you will find this lake full of boats and Chinese families - either tourists or locals.

The other interesting aspect about Changchun is the ski resorts that lie in its vicinity. These are claimed to be the best in China, and the most famous are probably Jingyuetan (with the longest slopes in Asia) and Beidaihu. [Review by travelindicator]
