Peace and quiet in Tuscany

Cassale Maritimo is a commune in the Italian province of Pisa, Tuscany
A sleepy hilltop town with a population of 1,005

Imagine for a second you are us. Sat somewhere in the hills of Tuscany not too far from the Etruscan coast around August. Every town you read about in travel guides, small or big, in any direction the wind blows is filled to the brim with tourists from early in the morning until late in the evening. Walking through charming Tuscan villages as if you are strolling around in a Hong Kong shopping mall is not exactly our idea of a romantic holiday in Tuscany.

So you go and ponder places that you could visit where the crowds will be thinner. And you will be worried that those places are going to be less interesting, because otherwise they would be full of people, right? Wrong. In Tuscany you can still find plenty of towns that may miss that one big headline attraction but are every bit as charming as the "must see" towns you see pop up on every list.

Casale Marittimo, just outside of Cecina and under 10km from the coast, fits the bill for us. This town only seems to get tourists who are in the know and has everything to offer you look for small towns here: a medieval center with narrow winding streets that just about fit one car through them, laundry hanging out of many a window, the seniors of the town sitting on the corner of the square eating an ice cream and chatting away about every outsider that passes by. Tourist infrastructure isn't very developed, but a few family-run restaurants/enoteca and hotels can lengthen your stay here a bit. Sights to look out for are the Clock Tower and House of the Treasurer. [Review by travelindicator]
