Cape Town (Afrikaans: Kaapstad) is the second biggest city and legislative capital of South Africa. It's "European" history started out when Jan van Riebeeck stepped on shore here in 1652 and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) subsequently made the Cape a supply station. Long before that the Khoisan people had been living here.
Cape Town is located in the far south-west of the country, near the Cape of Good Hope. It is overlooked by the Table Mountain, has great beaches and is surrounded by South Africa's wine country. Gifted with such a remarkable location, is it any wonder Cape Town is a special kind of place? The contrast between the rugged Table Mountain and (some of the) less rugged aspects of the city underneath couldn't be greater.
Obviously the city is a product of the past 350 years. Its multiracial population brings diversity and the city has a cosmopolitan feel because of it. Things seem quite harmonised. Yet venture a bit further and you will see the poverty of the townships and the enormous contrast to the wealthier parts of town. This offers a decidedly different image.
Nevertheless, Cape Town is a fantastic place to be, and its history is what makes it fascinating. The restaurant and bar scene can compete with other cities of its size, the beaches are great, and the surrounding nature is spectacular. Make your way over there! [Review by travelindicator]
