Cairns is a city in northern Queensland, Australia with a population of nearly 150,000 people. It has a tropical climate and typically serves as the entry point to the Great Barrier Reef. The (rain) forests of Daintree and Kuranda also lie in the vicinity of the city.
Save for some art galleries and Cairns Museum which focuses on the city's history, there is not an enormous amount to see and do within the city proper. Yet combine the laid-back and cosmopolitan atmosphere with the fantastic nature around the city and you still have a tourist hotspot. And with (max.) temperatures throughout the year ranging between 26 and 31°C it is not hard to see why tourists flock here (just make sure you avoid the monsoon season, in particular December till March, but some would include November and April-May).
One of the most interesting places to check out in Cairns is the saltwater Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, a large artificial lagoon and beach near the Pier where people come in summer to cool off as there are no actual beaches in the city proper. Of course if you want real beaches, you just need to head very slightly north past the airport to find Machans Beach and Holloways Beach. [Review by travelindicator]
