On a series of hills

Cagliari is the capital of Italy's Sardinia, built on a series of hills
The Bastion of Saint Remy offers great panoramic views
Poetto beach offers 8km of white sand beach with shallow waters in front of it

Cagliari is the capital and largest city of Italy's autonomous region of Sardinia, situated in the deep south of the island, overlooking the Bay of the Angels.

Built on a series of hills, its ancient citadel (called the Castello and the origin of the city's Sardinian name Casteddu) is the heart of the city where you will find sights like the Bastion of Saint Remy, offering great panoramic sights over town towards the sea. Other sights like the 13th century Cagliari Cathedral featuring royal tombs, or the medieval Torre dell'Elefante and many other sights are all in easy walking distance from here.

So there is plenty of culture to be seen in Cagliari. But let's not forget the 8km long Poetto beach with its warm and relatively shallow waters, a fantastic place to dip in after a day of touring the city. Behind it many restaurants and bars line the waterfront.

Getting to Cagliari is convenient, as you can either take a flight (just book a connecting flight from Rome) or arrive here by ferry from places like Naples or Palermo. [Review by travelindicator]
