Busan (previously Romanized as Pusan) is a city of over 3.5 million people in the south-east of the Republic of (South) Korea. It is the largest seaport in South Korea, as well as the country's second most populous city after Seoul. Besides the Busan International Film Festival that's held here each October, one of the most significant in Asia, the city's main draws are its beaches, springs, temples and breathtaking scenery. And of course the fact that its notably more low-key and laid-back than the nationan's capital.

Beaches - Take your pick out of Haeundae Beach, Songjeong Beach or Gwangalli Beach. Haeundae is filled to the brim in summer months, but nonetheless the beach (and all the bars and eateries around) are the center of everything in Busan on a hot summer day. Songjeong is similar but less crowded, while Gwangalli is less developed overall. The latter is also famous for a suspension bridge that is beautifully lit at night.

Scenery - Head to the rocky shore at Taejongdae Park, with its imposing cliffs facing the sea. The two famous sights there are the white lighthouse and Sinseon Rock ("Suicide Rock").

Springs - Hur Shim Chung Spa is an enormous spa complex and one of the better ones in Busan. Beautiful sceneries and every temperature available, from icy cold to steaming hot.

Temples - Yonggungsa Temple and Beomeosa Temple are the most important ones to explore. The first one is fantastically set alongst the shore, whereas the latter is set on the slope of the Geumjeongsan mountain.

And oh yeah, if you want to go shopping, Shinsegae Department Store in town is the largest department store in the world. Shop away! [Review by travelindicator]

More Busan travel resources

There is plenty of stuff to be found online about Busan. Visit Korea has good basic info, while Dynamic Busan is good for agendas and such. We liked an article by Tommy Ooi that lists 9 must visit Busan attractions, and this Lex Paradise one on the 10 best ones (we wonder which one Tommy Ooi is missing, just kidding though). CNN has a good one that it wrote up for the film festival in Busan in 2011. Good blogs can be found here and here and here.
