Charming Burlington

Burlington is the largest city of Vermont at 42,000 people and is quite picturesque
Home to a university which livens things up, as well as good shopping, museums, restaurants
Lake Champlain and its waterfront as well as surrounding mountains are excellent for outdoors activities

If you've been nosing around a bit on this website, you'd know that we are a sucker for charming smaller cities. Burlington, Vermont is one such place that we can't help but rave about. In a way it is strange we even classify it as a small city, as it is after all the largest one in the state of Vermont. But at a population of just over 42,000, that of course says more about Vermont than it does about Burlington...

Burlington is located on Lake Champlain and is home to the University of Vermont, whose presence (or rather that of it's 13,000+ students) has a big impact on the town. It has the image of being quite a liberal town, and probably the best way to get a taste of that is to head to the pedestrian-only Church Street Marketplace shopping street where you will find a combination of boutique shops and restaurants, all in a picturesque small-town setting. In summer the restaurants offer outdoors dining, while in winter the whole setting becomes extra atmospheric due to the decorative christmas lights and the snow which tends to fall.

Other attractions in town include the Flynn theater and several good museums (the Shelburne Museum is excellent and dedicated to art, design, and Americana - however it also hosts European paintings from for instance Monet, Manet and Degas). The best sight of all is of course the nature around town. The Waterfront Park offers magnificent views over the lake, in the summer you can go swimming or canoeing. Or else go biking or hiking around the lake into the nearby mountains or even rent a pair of (cross-country) skis? For that you will probably still have to drive at least 45 minutes, though.
