Buenos Aires ("good air" in Spanish) is the capital of Argentina. The city is located in the north of the country, at the Río de la Plata. Across the water lies Uruguay.
The city's exterior combines romantic colonial architecture - you could easily be fooled to think you were in Europe - with skyscrapers, has great shopping and nightlife, but most of all has a smiling and engaging population that makes any visit to this cosmopolitan city truly a pleasure.
The must see attractions of Buenos Aires include the colorful (but touristy) La Boca barrio where you will see Tango dancers practicing their moves, the Plaza de Mayo (with the Presidential Palace from where Evita gave her famous speeches, as well as a cathedral and colonial town hall flanking it) and the Recoleta cemetery with its enormous over the top mausoleums and statues. Here you will find the final resting place of Evita as well as many Argentinian greats.
When it comes to eating, this place is the steak capital of the world, served in the Parilla's. Pizza is especially easy to find as well. The main areas for exploring the city's nightlife are the areas around the Recoleta and around the Presidential Palace. For something a bit more hip and trendy try the Palermo barrios.
Unfortunately there are no beaches within city limits - the nearest Argentine beaches are hours away, at Mar del Plata. [Review by travelindicator]
