Brasília is the capital of Brazil, located in the country's Highlands and home to 2.8 million people. The city was officially founded in 1960, when then president Kubitschek decided to move the capital away from Rio de Janeiro which had been the capital for nearly 200 years. He opted for a more centrally located place, and within 4 years the city of Brasília was established.
Filled with modernist architecture, even from above Brasília looks impeccably planned. Shaped like an airplane, the residents inhabit both wings, the cockpit is filled with government buildings and the Three Powers Square in the center, and the rear is taken by memorials and parks. It is an interesting place to check out, though quite spread out (from cockpit to rear is nearly 10km), making a car a prerequisite for checking this somewhat odd city out.
Besides the aforementioned square with Congress, Presidential Palace and Supreme Court (the sun shines exactly between the two Congress towers on April 21, Tiradentes Day), the hypermodern Brasilia Cathedral and Television Tower are interesting sights. If you are looking for nature, Paranoá Lake to the east of the city is a good place to check out.
In a sense Brasília has quite a bit in common with places like Canberra in Australia or Astana in Kazakhstan. [Review by travelindicator]
