Boston is the capital city of the state of Massachusetts, situated on the country's east coast at about a 3-4 hour drive from New York City. With its wealth in cultural attractions, impressive architecture and attractive cityscape around a natural harbor, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States.
If you want to understand what makes Boston so attractive to tourists, you have to go back in its history. Founded in 1630 by English settlers (the Puritans), Boston is one of the oldest cities in the whole country. And its cityscape reflects that status, showing off old churches and red brick houses towered over by shiny modern towers. The best way to get a taste of all this history is the Freedom Trail, a 2.5 miles (4 km) walk that brings you past 16 of the city's top historical sites and leading through the downtown area. This will bring you past amongst others the Massachusetts State House, King's Chapel, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Park Street Church.
Museum-wise the Museum of Fine Arts of Science Museum are probably your best bets if you only have limited time and want to check some of them out. The former has a large collection of French impressionist paintings while the latter is a safe bet if you're looking to spend a day out with your children.
Another interesting day out may be a visit to the campus of Harvard University. Here you can take a tour, drink a coffee at one of the cafes, make a stroll towards Charles River or just take in the views.
The best time to visit Boston is arguably the spring or the fall, as during those periods the city's parks will give you the most picturesque views. [Review by travelindicator]
