Bordeaux, who hasn't uttered that word when ordering a red wine in a restaurant anywhere in the world? This port city near the Atlantic coast in the south-west of France is practically the wine capital in the world. And while food and wine should be pretty high on your list of reasons to come to this city or surrounding region of Aquitaine, don't think for a moment that there is nothing else to see here. Bordeaux is a historic city that combines one of the most interesting urban city centers in France with trendy modern areas and a relaxed attitude. The city's active student population of 60,000 ensures that things don't get too dull, however!
Outside of the city you find chateaux and famous vineyards, perhaps best explored (and savoured) on Wine route of the Médoc. But back to the city - the whole city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described by the organisation as having "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble". The Quartier Saint-Eloi with its Grosse Cloche, nearby cathedral and the Porte de Bourgogne are three of the main historical sights.
If you like modern art the Musee D'Art Contemporain is worth a visit, and at the end of a day head over for a relaxing stroll at the Quais on the banks of the Garonne. If you finish things with a good meal and a fine glass of red, you'll realise: you couldn't have picked a better spot for that city trip. [Review by travelindicator]
