Bolzano (Bozen in German) is a city in northern Italy that is the capital of the autonomous province of Alto Adige (South Tyrol). A relatively flat city with a medieval core surrounded by vineyards and set against a backdrop of green hills, Bolzano is quite pretty. And that Bolzano is not a bad place to live in is testified by the fact that some years ago it was chosen as the Italian city with best quality of life - a survey which apparently takes into consideration 36 different factors and compares over 100 Italian cities.

Interestingly, while in many of the Italian towns surrounding Bolzano German is by far the most common first language, in Bolzano the tables are somewhat turned (75% speak Italian as first language). It makes for an interesting cultural mix - just don't try to guess in which language to greet people, you will fail miserably.

The most cosy time to visit Bolzano may be in December when it is home to Italy's most famous Christmas market and a bit of snow can complete the magic. But if you visit the city during the remainder of the year you will have plenty on your hands as well. Bolzano boasts a surprisingly large number of museums, of which the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology (home to the famous Ötzi the Iceman, the mummy of a man who lived in the region around 3,300 BCE) should probably be on top of your list.

Other attractions include churches and castles, but basically the town center itself is one big attraction: many of the building facades might remind you of northern Europe, but if you stroll the narrow Via Portici shopping street, you would not for a moment imagine that you're anywhere to the north of the Alps! It is precisely that clash of flavors that makes Bolzano so interesting. [Review by travelindicator]
