Bishkek is the capital (and largest city) of what some people claim is the most beautiful country in the world. It is also one of the major cities of Central Asia with a population of about 900,000.
Although Bishkek is a sizeable city and an important one in the region, it still has some way to go before it can truly be considered worldly and bustling, no matter what the locals will tell you. Clearly the conservatism that surrounds it has less of an impact here, but cosmopolitan? The cityscape of Bishkek is largely composed of impressive Soviet-era buildings and spacious boulevards. While those ingredients normally would create a different vibe, Bishek's is actually a very friendly city. Its nightlife might just beat that of any other place in the region, and where in similar places in other nearby countries tourists may want to take care of their safety when exploring the city, there is not much need for that in Bishkek.
Other than eating and drinking, the main sights to be seen in Bishkek are the impressive Ala-Too Square (Lenin Square until 1991), the State Historical Museum and the Osh Bazaar.
Bishkek is located at an altitude of 700-900 metres (2,300-2,900 ft) at the feet of the Northern part of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountain range. Due to its location, the weather here ranges from very cold in winter months (-7 degrees Celsius / 19 degrees Fahrenheit on average in January) to very hot in summer (32 degrees Celsius / 89 degrees Fahrenheit in July).
