Bergamo lies in Lombardy, Italy and is located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the northeast of Milan. The city is essentially split up in two parts, an upper city and a lower city. The upper city, or the Città alta (old town) is rich with culture and history whereas the lower city is its more modern counterpart.
Althought the town is by no means very large, climbing your way from the lower city to the upper city can be a tiring ordeal. A cable car links these two parts of the city.
The core of the Città alta, and in fact the city as a whole, is the Piazza Vecchia. Arround here you will find all the amazing architecture from various eras that Bergamo is renowned for. The pace here is easy going, so by all means don't hurry to take it all in. [Review by travelindicator]
