Belize is a country in Central America (pop. 334,000 and the only country in the region without a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, instead facing the Caribbean Sea). Belize City is its largest city.
Most tourists end up in Belize to explore Mayan ruins, go diving (the infamous sinkhole of the Great Blue Hole is located here) or just to see the country's flora and fauna. They therefore tend to bypass the capital, which is understandable as there is not a great deal to be seen here. Making matters worse is that safety is commonly seen as an issue.
Nevertheless, if you don't venture too far away from the center of tourist activity, you should be fine. That area can be found around the tip of the peninsula, on both sides of the Swing Bridge, where you will amongst others find some relatively run-down colonial buildings and the Belize Museum, which has an interesting collection of artifacts related to Mayan civilization. There is also a cathedral and the colorful cruise ship terminal area. For those looking for shopping, bars and nightlife, Belize City is your best bet in the entire country.
