Belém is the capital of the northern Brazilian state of Pará, and also its largest city. Not to be confused with the famous tower or part of Lisbon Portugal with the same name. Belém sits at the Bay of Guajará and mouth of the Rio Guamá. With its industrial backdrop it is not necessarily the most worthwhile city to visit in northern Brazil (that honor may just go to nearby São Luís), but is nevertheless an interesting place to spend a day or two in, if only because this was the first European colony in the Amazon.

What stood out for us during our visit to Belém is that while at first sight it may not look like much, there is in fact quite a bit of beauty. You just have to look through a good amount of roughness to actually get to it. The waterfront Cidade Velha is definitely part of the beauty, with charming narrow streets lined with numerous colorful colonial-era buildings. That combines well with major historical sights like the 17th century Forte do Castelo and Catedral da Se. Other sights worth checking out in the same area include the Belém Arts Museum and the sounds and smells of the fresh produce displayed at the Mercado Ver-o-Peso.

A bit further in land lies the equally appealing main square of Praça da República and the neoclassical Theater of Peace adjacent to it. [Review by travelindicator]
