Atlanta is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Georgia. The population of the city proper is a modest 444,000, but the metropolitan area accounts for nearly 5.5 million people making this one of the larger cities in the United States. What's more, with a GDP of US$270 billion, Atlanta's economy ranks among the 15 largest in the world.
Obviously, a lot of what goes on in this town is strictly business, as is evidenced by the skyscrapers in Downtown and Midtown. But Atlanta is not just the economic capital of the (new) South, it is also its cultural highlight. Some of those highlights relate to the South's history, but others are decidedly more modern. Pemberton Place in Downtown Atlanta is a great place to start with exploring those modern attractions. Here you will find in close vicinity the Georgia Aquarium (the largest aquarium in the world), CNN Center (which can be toured) and the World of Coca-Cola, an attraction which in its own words will "quench your thirst for fun".
More historic attractions include the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Sweet Auburn, an area which comprises his birth house and final resting place, as well as a memorial and the church where he used to give his sermons. It is a must-see.
A giant panda in the Atlanta Zoo, a botanical garden, Piedmont Park and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History conclude the list of sights you will want to check out while here.
But maybe we're focussing too much on the sights. We're sure you have heard of Southern Charm? Well, Atlanta has it. Some say it combines the worldly outlook of a major city with the friendliness normally found in small towns. Sounds mighty appealing, doesn't it? [Review by travelindicator]
