Konstantinos Dafalias

The cradle of western civilization

While searching for appropriate pictures for this article we had to click our way around rioters and people carrying banners with none too charming slogans on them. But let us tell you something. This city has a history of 3,400 years and if you think recent events are anything more than the most minor of events in its long history, you will be sadly mistaken.

Athens is the largest city and capital of Greece, as well as its most prominent city both economically and politically. The city is typically seen as the cradle of western civilization, as during classical times it was one of the most powerful city-states in the world and has had an enormous impact on arts, philosophy and politics. Playing host to the 2004 Olympics has acted as a catalyst for urban renewal. Nowadays the city's infrastructure is miles ahead of what it used to be, and the fact that cars are no longer allowed in the historical center does not hurt the tourist experience either.

The classical roots of Athens are hard to avoid with the Parthenon towering over it from the Acropolis, which was the ancient fortified town of Athens. Surrounding this are other top attractions like the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus etcetera. The theme here is clear and walking around in between structures with sometimes a history of 2,500 years or more is absolutely fascinating. Around the same area you will find the now infamous Syntagma Square and Greek Parliament.

Athens isn't just a blast from the past. Walk along the picturesque streets of Plaka, do some souvenir shopping or enjoy a souvlaki in a restaurant on a small and quiet street to discover the present-day charm that is also very prevalent here. And we haven't even gotten into the museums, shopping, city views and beaches nearby... [Review by travelindicator]
