Annecy is a medieval town located to the North of the French Alps. It is centered around a 14th century chateau and is criss-crossed by canals (hence the nickname). Located at the edge of the Lac d'Annecy (famous for its turquoise waters) and with the peaks of Le Semnoz overlooking it, it is fantastically located and it should be no surprise to anyone that this town is one of the most popular tourist towns in the French Alps.
Given its proximity to both the lake and mountains, this is a great place for some active sports - swimming, biking or hiking. In terms of sights, the Palais d'Isle (former prison located on an island in between the canals) and the Annecy Castle are the most famous and well-worth exploring. Needless to say the town is filled to the brim with good restaurants, boulangeries and café's. [Review by travelindicator]
