Alicante (or Alacant) is the capital of the province with the same name in Spain's Valencia region. It is located on the Costa Blanca, and the main reason most tourists will fly in to it are the resort towns like Benidorm and Torrevieja that lie near to it further along the coast. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there is nothing to see or do here, as in fact Alicante is an excellent spot to visit if you want to enjoy the same fantastic beaches as the resort towns just mentioned, but prefer a bit more depth to your holidays.
Because besides beaches, what you should think of when considering a trip to Alicante are castles, churches, and museums. The medieval Castle of Santa Barbara towers over the town and hails from the ninth century. From here you can get great views over the port and Postiguet beach. In terms of museums you can make your pick between for instance the Archaeological Museum, Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Modern Art.
In the evenings head into the old town and explore a bustling district where the narrow streets are lined with bars. [Review by travelindicator]
