Albany is the oldest colonial settlement in Western Australia, established in 1826 and continuously inhabited since then. You can fly from Perth in an hour, or drive across State Route 30 for about 5 hours to get here.
As in most coastal towns in Western Australia, natural sights take center stage and tourists make their way to town to enjoy the beautiful beaches at Emu Point and Middleton Beach. Both are great for swimming and a quick few minutes drive from the center of town. Head further and you find even more enthralling beaches like the ones at Nanurup Beach and Little Beach with its fine white sand and turquoise waters. Go the other way and you can explore the fantastic Torndirrup National Park. The coastal scenery is notably more rugged here than further north-east in the Perth-Margaret River stretch.
And although you can easily fill your days with all the natural beauty that abounds in this place, the town itself is very quaint as well. York Street with its shops, cafes and restaurants leads towards the harbor and is nice for a relaxing stroll. Towards the end of it you find the main museum of the Albany Convict Gaol. Whale World and the National Anzac Centre are two other attractions to look out for. [Review by travelindicator]
