Al Ain (United Arab Emirates)

Al Ain Travel Guide and Trip Resources

Emirati Garden City

Al Ain is the fourth largest city in the UAE
Built around an oasis and overlooked by the second highest mountain in the country
Lots of greenery in the form of an oasis and gardens, and some cultural sights

We reckon there must be days when the average Emirati walks the streets of Abu Dhabi and especially Dubai, and thinks to himself: this is nothing like the place that I grew up in, and where are my own people? On such days we like to imagine that the same Emirati can head to a place like Al Ain and feel right at home again. Of course that may just be us projecting our romantic notions on a group of people we don't know much about, but I digress.

As you approach Al Ain (about a 2 hour drive from both of the aforementioned cities, the city is actually located in the Abu Dhabi emirate on the border with Oman), you will not really see the city coming as it is located around an oasis in the desert. But once you're in you will at times be surprised by the amount of greenery you see, especially around the several oases itself (which you can either walk or drive through). A number of public gardens complete the city's green attractions.

Other sights are of a more cultural nature. In the Sheikh Zayeed Palace Museum, home of the former first ruler of the country you can get a good idea of how he used to live here. The National Museum explores the region's ethnography and archaeological findings. Besides this, you will find a souq and zoo in the city, and just outside of it lies Jebel Hafeet, the second highest mountain of the country, offering good views over the city.
