Capital of rustic Akita

Akita is the capital of the Prefecture with the same name

Senshu Park with a replica of Kubota Castle as well as some good museums

Akita (秋田) is a city of 323,000, capital of the prefecture with the same name in the north of Honshu, Japan. It is easily reached by Shinkansen from Tokyo via Morioka, and if you are thinking of heading to Hokkaido, you may want to consider jumping on the ferry here.

Besides for being the regional hub, the city of Akita itself will probably not keep you entertained for more than a day or so. The Senshu Park with a replica of Kubota Castle that stood here is nice to stroll around in, even more so during the cherry blossom season. Similar kind words can be used to describe the Senshu Museum of Art as well as the Prefectural Museum are, which are both interesting enough. The Night Parades of the Akita Kanto (pole lantern) Festival which you see pictured with this article are worth a special mention. These are held early August. Finally, if you want to do shopping of any kind, the Aeon Mall should be your first target.

More of interest is perhaps the rest of the prefecture, which is rather rural in nature and tends to get blanketed by snow in winter. It doesn't get more rustic than this in Japan, and sights like the samurai town of Kakunodate, Lake Towada (bright blue in color), Lake Tazawa (the deepest in Japan) and Mount Chokai can all make for good day trips from the city. An excellent source for reading up more on the city is Japan Visitor, and the same can be said about Japan Travel. We didn't find many travel blogs, but worth checking out are Out of town blog which focuses on the city, and the Japan Two blog which instead writes about sights elsewhere in the Prefecture.
