In our opinion, Ajaccio is quite lovely. In fact, entire Corsica is a perfectly lovely place. Fantastic beaches and azure waters, a mountainous interior that rises up quickly from the coast, seaside towns that handsomely compete with the Riviera. And a history under Genovese (Italian) rule as well as a slightly rebelious streak that sets it apart from mainland France culturally. What's not to like?
Ajaccio itself is not a terribly large city (population under 70,000), but it can boast having brought forth one of the greatest European generals: Napoleon Bonaparte was born here in 1769. His house of birth is one of Ajaccio's main attractions and houses a museum on his life.
This is a small town, so perfect to be explored on foot. Just park your car anywhere in the center and then stroll about in and around the streets of the palm-tree lined Place Marechal Foch (with its commanding Napoleon statue). Perhaps do some shopping in some of the boutiques around (but beware of the cost) and then stroll slowly towards the house of Napoleon. In the end return to grab a beverage at the extremely picturesque harbor area. There is a wealth of great restaurants and cafés here, so you'll be spoilt for choice.
Ajaccio is the type of city that can be toured in an afternoon. [Review by travelindicator]
