If you like remote places or places with harsh weather, there's a good chance you are going to like Abashiri. Think Sapporo and then another 5 hours to the north-east, that's roughly where you will find this city of under 40,000 people. Winters here are harsh, when the river and Abashiri lake as well as occasionally the sea freeze over.
Amongst the Japanese this city is mostly known for its Meiji era prison where political prisoners were held in extraordinarily rough conditions. That prison is nowadays an outdoors museum (featuring enough English explanation to make a visit worth it for people who don't speak the language) and is worth a visit. The same can be said for Museum of Northern Peoples (which doesn't just focus on Japan's Ainu people) The rest of the fishing town is fairly unremarkable.
Nearby Shiretoko National Park as well as Akan National Park are worth a visit. [Review by travelindicator]
